In this Krazy Stones collection, Anthony Barrouyer creates jewelry using French silver coins "La Semeuse".
For historical context, it is important to note that the exact origin of currency is difficult to pinpoint, but gold and silver have been used as means of exchange since 4000 BC.
"La Semeuse" was introduced in 1887 and her effigy appeared during the Third, Fourth, and Fifth Republics, even among the three French models of the Euro. In 1887, renowned engraver Oscar Roty designed a medal for the Ministry of Agriculture, but the project was left unfinished. Eight years later, Finance Minister Paul Doumer chose Oscar Roty to engrave new coins to create "An original coin [...] in line with the new and Republican ideas" of France. The engraver used the effigy of the agricultural award, transforming its rural aspect into an idealized representation. The image sparked controversy, as some believed the woman with the Phrygian cap was sowing "disorder, anarchy, and darnel," while the true intention was to illustrate the spread of Republican ideas and the spirit of freedom by France in the world. This concept perfectly aligns with the spirit of Anthony Barrouyer's Krazy Stones creations.
